One of the greatest things about the Instagram community here in Boston is Can Ahtam and his portrait meets. Over the past year, Can (pronounced Jon) has hosted numerous portrait meet-ups throughout the Boston-Cambridge area. At each meet, Instagram photographers are invited to work with local models. The meets are completely free, and everyone volunteers their time to be there. Even the photos that are taken are shared with the models at no cost.
It's an amazing opportunity for the photographers, as not only are we learning from our peers, but we're also learning how to work with models. For many photographers who are just getting started, this can be a steep learning curve. There's the obvious matter of setting up the shot, etc., but over the course of a shoot, it's so important to learn how to communicate with your subject.
And the models - both professional and amateur - get something out of the meets as well, most especially they get dozens of new photos to add to their portfolios. Many of the models who have attended the meets in the past have since gained agent representation and are now working as professionals.
But more than anything, these meets provide a place for photographers and models to expand our community and network. If you're interested in joining, follow @PortraitMeet on Instagram to learn about future events. In addition to Can, Steve Nisotel and Rasvan Popa help to organize the meets.
